Dr. Panthi Presenting his findings |
Basu Panthi defended his PhD in chemistry from Baylor University, Texas on 28th of October. We would like to congratulate him for successfully completing the doctorate degree and also like to wish him for his future.
His PhD research was related to organometallic electrochemistry. The complexes used were rhodium diphosphine acyl complexes. His project involved the synthesis of complexes with different diphosphine and acyl groups including fluorinated ones, characterize them by infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, linear scan voltammetry, bulk electrolysis, X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, study the stability and reactivity of the synthesized complexes, study redox induced reactions (mainly decarbonylation), identify the intermediates and finally propose the reaction mechanism.
Organometallic complexes are the compounds containing metal-carbon bond. All the metals can form organometallic compounds. Organometallic compounds are mainly used for catalyzing the reactions. Organometallic research is growing with diversity of applications in academics or industries. Nobel prizes in chemistry awarded in 2001, 2005 and 2010 were for the work related to organometallics and it signifies the importance of this field in the current age. Rhodium is one of the most active catalytic metal and its compounds are being used as catalyst in various reactions. Study of organometallic chemistry is fast and diverse with modern analytical techniques like electrochemistry, spectroscopy etc. Electrochemistry is one of the important research of chemistry. Electroanalytical techniques can be used for the study of thermodynamics, kinetics and mechanisms of electron transfer reactions.
His PhD work have some interesting results along with the measurement of 19 new crystal structures. He has produced two journal articles so far and accoding to him few are coming soon. To access his published articles click the link given below.
