13 Years Old Passed IIT/JEE

13-year-old from Bihar cracks IIT entrance exam
PatnaSatyam Kumar, a Bihar farmer's son who is just 13-years old, has cleared the fiercely competitive Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) for which 150,000 candidates had appeared this year.

Satyam, who passed his class 12 exam last year, secured an impressive all-India rank of 679.

"We are proud of him. He has done something special at this age," Satyam's father Sidhnath Singh, a farmer, told IANS.

IIT-JEE (Advanced) results for admission into IITs were declared Friday.

According to IIT-JEE website, Sahal Kaushik from Delhi was the youngest person to have cracked the exam in 2010 at the age of 14. But now this record is held by Satyam.

"Now Satyam is the youngest to crack the IIT-JEE," an IIT official said.

Satyam, who hails from Bakhorapur village in Bhojpur district, had last year qualified for admission into IIT at the age of 12-and-a-half years after he got a special permission from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). He had then secured an all-India rank of 8,137.

Not satisfied with his low rank, he appeared for the IIT-JEE preliminary examination this year again and qualified.

"Satyam has improved his rank by his hard work and determination," his father said.

He appeared for the entrance examination in Kota, Rajasthan, where he had been studying. He was one of the 150,000 candidates who appeared for the examination this year.

Earlier, Satyam Kumar had said he wanted to establish a software company on the lines of social networking website Facebook.

Doctors are helped by IIT,IIM study to manage time efficiently

The ever increasing load of patient care is putting severe constraints on doctors' time for teaching and research. Professors from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) have carried out a study to help doctors in a teaching hospital manage their time better.

The study - Planning the Activities of Doctors in a Teaching Hospital by IIM-A professors Debjit Roy and K V Ramani, and IIT-B professor Sahil Narang has drawn out alternate timetables for doctors to help them perform a variety of teaching, research.and many more.

.For the study, the team focused on the Christian Medical College Hospital in Vellore, where doctors' daily workload has grown primarily due to large patient volumes. The hospital handled a daily load of 5,000 outpatients, 2,000 inpatients, and 125 surgeries and large student intake per year - about 2,000 students in various health disciplines. Ineffective doctor activities plan often resulted in missed activities, long duration of stay for patients, more than 10 hospital hours per day for doctors, and low patient satisfaction levels.

The study proposes alternate plans for doctors' activities without compromising on their involvement in other activities and maintaining the same quality of patient service. "The period of stay of outpatients as well as doctors' hospital hours are reduced substantially, mutually benefiting both the hospital and the patients," said the study.

For example, the timetable suggests that if the patient load is up to 400 per day and the consultation time is between 15 and 20 minutes, then two full OPD days per week would be the best. Two full days OPD cycle is also preferable if the patient load increases to 500 per day. The problem arises only if the patient load is increased to 500 per day and the consultation time is also increased, then the four half-day OPD schedule would be best.

If the hospital follows four half days of OPD schedule, then, clearly the patients are able to get over with their OPD treatment in much less time than before, as in one week now, they can receive consultation four times rather than two times.

The focus of the study is to develop a plan to manage the growth in OPD patient volumes.

However, the intake of both undergraduate and postgraduate students is also expected to increase.

The study also suggests that due to increase in the student batch size, grand ward visits or bedside teaching for all students can be substituted with classroom teaching, where special cases can be shared with a larger audience. By eliminating the grand rounds, there can also be an increased commitment to journal clubs, PG seminars, and research activities.

Get Direct Admission In Maharani's College,Jaipur

Maharani's College has given direct admission to 388 students out of 2,800 seats in eight courses owing to high percentage on Saturday. Candidates who scored between 95% and 97% were given direct admission in B Com pass course.

In BA, candidates who scored between 86% and 96.80% were given admission. Similarly, candidates scoring 75% were admitted in BCA and BBA (88%).

The college will, however, release its first cut-off list on June 29.

Vidya Jain, principal of Maharani's College, said: "Direct admissions were given to those candidates who are on the higher side in terms of percentage. It will only reduce the work during the first cut-off list." College is expecting that the final cut-off of B Com will touch 94% against 92% last year owing to good results this year.

With the number of seats have increased by 25%, the college is expecting a rush of students from lower percentages. So far, the college has received over 7,900 forms against 2,880 seats in eight courses. "Now we are expecting that forms will touch upto 10,000. College has received forms from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat," said Jain.
